BAUN Annual Conference 2017 showcased the inaugural Bruce Turner Award and this award returns again for its ninth year in 2026. Bruce Turner was a well known and loved BAUN member, a nurse consultant at the Homerton Hospital, London, and BAUN Education lead for many years.
Our beloved friend and colleague passed away in 2016 after a terminal diagnosis of cancer. He was determined to continue his mission to educate and impassion urological nurses and left instructions that a legacy should continue in his name.
His legacy has been used to establish The Bruce Turner Award. An annual prize which will provide a fully funded place (transport within the UK, accommodation and conference fees) to the BAUN annual conference, funding to attend a BAUN Trustee Meeting and mentorship from one of the BAUN Trustees. In return, the winner will be expected to write a report for the BAUN newsletter and attend the Trustee Meeting & Study Day in June 2027.
If you feel that you could benefit from this opportunity, please complete the application form by clicking the link below.
If you are a nursing manager or work with junior staff, please encourage them to apply, as this is an outstanding opportunity for urology nurses to benefit from mentorship and exposure to national urological expertise and practice. Even though we strongly encourage junior urology nurses to apply, all applications will be considered.

This medal is to celebrate and recognise a legacy of exceptional and continued contribution to British Urology Nursing.
Rachel Leaver was a founder member of BAUN and had remained strongly involved with the association over the years of the organisation’s existence. So committed was she to the mission and values of BAUN that the heart of the association itself reflects so much of what was important to Rachel.
Rachel’s energy and enthusiasm kept the attention of all audience members throughout every talk she delivered. Her love of teaching really shone during her educational presentations and although she had retired from her clinical role at UCLH, Rachel remained engaged in her work as an educator through the university and through BAUN.
Rachel’s support of the BAUN further extended when she became Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Urological Nursing. Here her passion for research and the sharing of best practice came to the fore. As a first-class communicator, Rachel’s gift for writing facilitated the education of thousands of nurses globally. Indeed, it is very likely that you yourself have read some of her work as she was a very prolific author and contributed greatly to the body of knowledge related to urological nursing.
Rachel’s love of life, urology and nursing radiated from her in all that she did. We will show our gratitude to her by continuing to provide the highest standards of education, networking and professional development and honour her contribution and memory through this award.
This award is only bestowed in cases of truly outstanding service. Therefore, there is no imperative for the award to be conferred every year and it may be withheld in the absence of an appropriate recipient.
The winner will be presented with the Rachel Leaver Medal and certificate. The following year they will receive a fully funded place at conference including an Awards Dinner ticket plus Lifetime Honorary Membership.
